We’ve talked about hair a couple of times on the blog, so it should come as no surprise that natural hair is one of my favorite topics. I love empowering black women to embrace their natural roots and equipping them with products that encourage growth, maintenance, and confidence. I also love pointing all kinds of women to products that work.

But you won’t see me starting a natural hair YouTube channel or posting Instagram tutorials anytime soon because I have got to be the laziest natural on the planet. I wash my hair, wear it in twists, wear it in the style you see in my profile pic, pull the bangs back, wash, and repeat. That is the extent of my hair adventure.

So, when Misty Marr contacted me about reviewing some products from Lilla Rose, I was a bit hesitant.

Don’t get me wrong! I’ve heard of Lilla Rose products before, and I’ve seen their beautiful designs all over the place. However, because I’m not big on trying new things with my hair, and because my hair is too thick for a lot of clips on the market, I was convinced most of what she sent me would sit, unused, on my bathroom counter.

I’m glad I was wrong, and I’m excited to share three of my favorite Sweet Hairlooms Lilla Rose products with you!

The Hairband

My favorite and most-used accessory was the hairband. It’s one of the simplest pieces that I requested, but it’s easily been my most-used. I love the look of headbands, but I’ve been blessed with a satellite for a head and pretty thick hair, so they’re usually uncomfortably tight and end up giving me a headache.

I love the adjustable straps on the Sweet Hairlooms Lilla Rose headband. I chose the bright yellow Arela because, in my world, yellow is a basic and goes with everything in my closet.

The Hair Clip

I waited the longest to try the hair clip because I was most skeptical about this piece. I’m still growing my hair out after a big chop two years ago (this July), and any updo besides a puff usually requires more than one clip and bobby pin to pull off. The silken-haired models in the pictures on the site didn’t give me much confidence, and I imagined my hair breaking the feeble clip in two.

I received several different clips in various sizes, and while I think the smaller ones would work for a half-up, half-down style, the large was sufficient to pin back my hair. I was able to pull off an updo using just one clip and no bobby pins, which is no small feat for hair that is 1) as thick as mine, and 2) just an inch or so past shoulder-length when stretched. I ended up with the Honey Bee clip, which was adorable.

The U-Pins

Third place was a toss-up between the bobby pins and the u-pins. The u-pins won because, while I loved the bobby pins and wore them often, I’ve found similar products for cheaper at other stores.

It is worth mentioning, though, that these pins are high quality, so while you might be able to get more bang for your buck in other places, the Sweet Hairlooms Lilla Rose pins do have some gorgeous little details that you may not be able to find.

The u-pins, though, were unique. Their wide-set hinges made them perfectly capable to standing up against my mane, and I love that their decorations are a little more noticeable than the bobby pins. I chose the Violet U-Pin.

Conclusion

When I was contacted about this review, I wasn’t sure how these hair products would fair with a woman who is 1) black, and therefore has thicker and coarser hair than the majority of the models using the products on the site, and 2) a little lazy, and tends not to try new or adventurous things with her hair. But they worked really well with my hair texture (I’m mostly 4A, for any natural hair enthusiast reading along), and with my no-fuss hair lifestyle. They enabled me to try one or two new styles, but also just added a nice, pretty touch to my regular, everyday styles.
